We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the mosque when a man came in and prayed in one corner of the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ watched him closely. Then the man came over and greeted him, and he returned the greeting and said, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed."This happened two or three times. On the third or fourth time, the man said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I have exerted myself to the utmost. Teach me and show me."The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "When you want to pray, perform ablution and do it well. Then face the qiblah and say the takbir. Then recite, then bow until you are still in your bowing. Then rise until you are still standing upright. Then prostrate until you are still in your prostration. Then rise until you are still sitting. Then prostrate until you are still in your prostration. Then stand up. If you complete your prayer in this way, you have completed it. Whatever you fall short of in this, you have only diminished from your prayer."
