Ali proposed to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl and was promised the marriage. Fatimah came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Your people are saying that you do not get angry on behalf of your daughters. Ali has proposed to the daughter of Abu Jahl."The Prophet ﷺ stood up, praised Allah, and extolled Him, then said, "Fatimah is a part of me, and I hate that anyone should put her to trial." He then mentioned Abu al-As bin Rabi and praised him highly, saying, "The daughter of the Prophet of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah cannot be brought together as co-wives." So Ali abandoned that proposal.
