Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan bin Hakam reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out in the year of Hudaybiya intending to visit the House, not intending to fight. He drove with him seventy sacrificial camels, and the people were seven hundred men, so each camel was on behalf of ten men.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ travelled on, and when he was at Usfan, Bishr bin Sufyan Kabi met him and said, "Messenger of Allah, this is Quraysh. They have heard of your march and have come out with their milk camels and their young. They have put on leopard skins and are pledging to Allah that you will never enter it upon them by force. Khalid bin Walid is here with their cavalry. They have advanced to Kura Ghamim."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Woe to Quraysh. War has devoured them. What harm would it do them if they left me and the rest of the people to each other? If they defeat me, that is what they wanted. And if Allah gives me victory over them, they would enter Islam in full numbers. If they do not do that, then they will fight while they still have strength. So what does Quraysh imagine? By Allah, I will not cease to strive for what Allah sent me with until Allah makes it prevail, or this neck of mine is severed."Then he ordered the people, and they took the road to the right, through the salt bushes, along a way that would bring him out at Thaniyat Murar and Hudaybiya, below Makkah. He led the army along that road, and when the cavalry of Quraysh saw the dust of the army turning aside from their road, they fell back and returned to Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on, and when he had entered Thaniyat Murar his camel knelt down. The people said, "She has balked."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "She has not balked, and that is not in her nature. Rather she was held back by the One who held back the elephant from Makkah. By Allah, Quraysh will not ask me today for any terms in which they seek the ties of kinship without my granting it to them."Then he said to the people, "Dismount."They said, "Messenger of Allah, there is no water in the valley for the people to camp beside."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took an arrow from his quiver and gave it to a man from his companions. The man went down into one of those wells and drove the arrow into it, and the water gushed up in abundance until the people had drunk their fill and their camels rested beside it.When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had settled, Budayl bin Warqa came with men of Khuza, and he said to them what he had said to Bishr bin Sufyan. They returned to Quraysh and said, "People of Quraysh, you are being hasty with Muhammad. Muhammad has not come to fight. He has come only as a visitor to this House, honoring its sanctity."But Quraysh mistrusted them.Muhammad, meaning Ibn Ishaq, said that Zuhri said that in the absence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Khuza, both its Muslims and its polytheists, kept nothing hidden from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of what was happening in Makkah.Quraysh said, "Even if he has come only for that, by Allah he will never enter it upon us by force, and the Arabs will never speak of that."Then they sent to him Mikraz bin Hafs bin Akhyaf, one of the Banu Amir bin Luayy. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him he said, "This is a treacherous man."When he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to him much as he had spoken to his companions. Then he went back to Quraysh and told them what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said to him.So they sent to him Hulays bin Alqama Kinani, who at that time was the chief of the Ahabish. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him he said, "This man is from a people who are devoted to worship. Send the sacrificial animals out to meet him."They sent the animals out, and when he saw them streaming toward him from the side of the valley in their garlands, their coats worn from being kept so long from the place of sacrifice, he turned back without reaching the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, out of reverence for what he had seen. He said, "People of Quraysh, I have seen what may not lawfully be turned back. I have seen the sacrificial animals in their garlands, their coats worn from being kept so long from the place of sacrifice."They said, "Sit down. You are only a bedouin with no knowledge."Then they sent to him Urwa bin Masud Thaqafi, and he said, "People of Quraysh, I have seen the harsh treatment and foul language that those you send to Muhammad receive from you when they come back to you. You know that you are as a father to me and I am as a son to you, and I have heard of what has befallen you, so I gathered those of my people who would obey me and came to stand by you with myself."They said, "You have spoken the truth. You are not one we mistrust."So he went out until he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat before him and said, "Muhammad, you have gathered the rabble of the people and then brought them against your own kin to break them. This is Quraysh, come out with their milk camels and their young. They have put on leopard skins and are pledging to Allah that you will never enter it upon them by force. By Allah, it is as if I see these people around you deserting you tomorrow."Abu Bakr Siddiq, may Allah the Exalted be pleased with him, was sitting behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Suck the clitoris of Lat. Would we desert him?"Urwa asked, "Who is this, Muhammad?"He said, "This is the son of Abu Quhafa."Urwa said, "By Allah, were it not for a favor you once did me which I have not repaid, I would have answered you for that. But this one is for that."Then he reached out for the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while Mughira bin Shuba was standing over the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in armor. He struck his hand away and said, "Keep your hand from the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, it will not reach you."Urwa said, "Woe to you, how rough and harsh you are."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled.Urwa asked, "Who is this, Muhammad?"He said, "This is your brother's son, Mughira bin Shuba."Urwa said, "You treacherous one, did you not wash off your disgrace only yesterday?"Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to him as he had spoken to his companions and told him that he had not come seeking war.Urwa rose from the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ having seen what his companions did for him. He would not perform an ablution without their rushing for the water, nor spit without their rushing for it, nor would a hair of his fall without their taking it. So he returned to Quraysh and said, "People of Quraysh, I have come to Kisra in his kingdom, and to Caesar and the Negus in their kingdoms. By Allah, I have never seen any king among his people like Muhammad among his companions. I have seen a people who will never give him up for anything. So consider your position."Before this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent Khirash bin Umaya Khuzai to Makkah and mounted him on a camel of his called Thalab. When he entered Makkah, Quraysh hamstrung the camel under him and wanted to kill Khirash, but the Ahabish prevented them until he came back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Then he called Umar to send him to Makkah, and Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, I fear Quraysh for my life. There is no one of the Banu Adi there to protect me, and Quraysh know my enmity toward them and my harshness against them. But I will direct you to a man who is better protected than I am, Uthman bin Affan."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and sent him to Quraysh to tell them that he had not come for war, but had come as a visitor to this House, honoring its sanctity.Uthman set out until he came to Makkah, and Abban bin Saeed bin As met him, dismounted from his beast, mounted Uthman in front of him and rode behind him, and gave him protection until he had delivered the message of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Uthman went on until he came to Abu Sufyan and the chiefs of Quraysh and conveyed to them what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent him with. They said to Uthman, "If you wish to circle the House, then circle it."He said, "I would not do that until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ circles it."So Quraysh detained him with them, and word reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims that Uthman had been killed.Muhammad said that Zuhri told him that Quraysh sent Suhayl bin Amr, one of the Banu Amir bin Luayy, and said to him, "Go to Muhammad and make peace with him, and let there be nothing in the peace except that he turns back from us this year of his. By Allah, the Arabs will never speak of his having entered it upon us by force."So Suhayl bin Amr came to him, and when the Prophet ﷺ saw him he said, "The people have decided on peace, since they have sent this man."When he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the two of them spoke at length and went back and forth until peace was settled between them. When the matter was complete and nothing remained but the writing, Umar bin Khattab leapt up and went to Abu Bakr and said, "Abu Bakr, is he not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Are we not the Muslims? Are they not the polytheists?"Abu Bakr said, "Yes."Umar said, "Then why do we give in to humiliation in our religion?"Abu Bakr replied, "Umar, keep close to his stirrup wherever he goes, for I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah."Umar said, "And I bear witness to that too."Then he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, are we not the Muslims? Are they not the polytheists?"He said, "Yes."Umar said, "Then why do we give in to humiliation in our religion?"He answered, "I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I will not go against His command, and He will not let me be lost."Umar later said, "I did not cease to fast, give in charity, pray, and free slaves because of what I did that day, out of fear of the words I spoke, until I hoped that some good would come of it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Ali bin Abu Talib and said to him, "Write, in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."Suhayl bin Amr said, "I do not know this. Write instead, in Your name, Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Write, in Your name, Allah. This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon with Suhayl bin Amr."Suhayl bin Amr said, "If I bore witness that you are the Messenger of Allah I would not be fighting you. Write instead, this is what Muhammad bin Abdullah and Suhayl bin Amr have agreed upon."They agreed to lay down war for ten years, during which the people would be secure and would hold back from one another, on the condition that whoever came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from among his companions without the permission of his guardian would be returned to them, and whoever came to Quraysh from those with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not be returned to him, and that between them there would be no concealed treachery, and no theft and no betrayal.Among their conditions when they wrote the document was that whoever wished to enter into the pact and covenant of Muhammad could enter it, and whoever wished to enter into the pact and covenant of Quraysh could enter it. So Khuza leapt forward and said, "We are with the pact and covenant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." And Banu Bakr leapt forward and said, "We are in the pact and covenant of Quraysh."It was also agreed that he would turn back from them that year and not enter Makkah, and that the following year they would withdraw from him so that he might enter it with his companions and stay among them three days, carrying only the weapons of a rider, and not entering it with swords except sheathed in their scabbards. While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was writing the document, Abu Jandal bin Suhayl bin Amr came to him in chains, having escaped to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had set out with no doubt of victory, because of a dream the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had seen. When they saw the peace and the turning back and the terms the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken upon himself, a great distress came over the people, almost to the point of destroying them. When Suhayl saw Abu Jandal, he rose to him and struck his face, then said, "Muhammad, the agreement between me and you was concluded before this man came to you."He said, "You have spoken the truth." So Suhayl went to him and seized him by the collar.Abu Jandal cried out at the top of his voice, "Muslims, are you returning me to the people of shirk so that they may turn me from my religion?"This added to the distress of the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Abu Jandal, be patient and seek the reward, for Allah عز وجل will make for you and for those with you among the oppressed a way of relief and escape. We have made a peace between ourselves and these people. We gave them our word on it and they gave us their covenant on it, and we will not betray them."Umar bin Khattab leapt up and walked beside Abu Jandal, saying, "Be patient, Abu Jandal. They are only polytheists, and the blood of any one of them is no more than the blood of a dog." And he brought the hilt of his sword close to him.Umar said, "I hoped he would take the sword and strike his father with it. But the man would not harm his father, and the agreement went through."When the two of them had finished the document, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying within the sacred precinct while his camp was outside it. He stood and said, "People, sacrifice your animals and shave your heads."Not one man rose. Then he repeated it, and not one man rose. Then he repeated it again, and not one man rose.So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went back and came in to Umm Salama and said, "Umm Salama, what is the matter with the people?"She said, "Messenger of Allah, what has come over them is what you have seen. Do not speak to a single one of them. Go out to your sacrificial animal wherever it is, sacrifice it, and shave your head. If you do that, the people will do the same."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out without speaking to anyone until he came to his sacrificial animal and sacrificed it. Then he sat down and had his head shaved, and the people rose and began sacrificing and shaving. Then, when he was midway on the road between Makkah and Madinah, Surah Fath was revealed.
