We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the funeral of a man from the Ansar. We reached the grave before the side niche had been dug, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and we sat around him, still as though birds were perched on our heads. In his hand was a stick with which he was poking at the ground. Then he raised his head and said, "Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave," saying it two or three times. Then he said, "When the believing servant is departing from this world and setting out toward the next, angels with faces as bright as the sun descend to him from heaven, carrying with them a shroud from the shrouds of Paradise and perfume from the perfume of Paradise, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. Then the angel of death comes and sits by his head and says, 'Good soul, come out to forgiveness from Allah and to His pleasure.'"The Prophet ﷺ continued, "So it comes out, flowing as a drop flows from the mouth of a waterskin, and he takes it. Once he has taken it, they do not leave it in his hand for the blink of an eye before they take it from him and place it in that shroud and that perfume, and there comes from it a fragrance like the sweetest scent of musk ever found on the face of the earth."He said, "Then they ascend with it, and they do not pass by any company of angels without their asking, 'Who is this good soul?' They answer, 'So-and-so, the son of so-and-so,' using the finest names by which he was called in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven with him. They ask that it be opened for him, and it is opened, and the noblest angels of each heaven escort him to the heaven above it, until he is brought to the seventh heaven. Then Allah
says, 'Record the book of My servant in Illiyyun, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, to it I return them, and from it I will bring them out once again.'"He said, "So his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and sit him up.They ask him, 'Who is your Lord?'He replies, 'My Lord is Allah.'They ask, 'What is your religion?'He replies, 'My religion is Islam.'They ask, 'Who is this man who was sent among you?'He replies, 'He is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'They ask, 'And how did you come to know this?'He replies, 'I read the Book of Allah, believed in it, and accepted it as true.'Then a caller calls out from heaven, 'My servant has spoken the truth. Furnish him with bedding from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise.'"He said, "So its fragrance and sweetness reach him, and his grave is widened for him as far as he can see."He said, "Then a man with a handsome face, fine clothes, and a pleasant scent comes to him and says, 'Rejoice at what will delight you. This is the day you were promised.'The man asks him, 'Who are you? Yours is a face that brings good news.'He answers, 'I am your righteous deeds.'So the man says, 'My Lord, let the Hour come, so that I may return to my family and my wealth.'"He said, "As for the disbelieving servant, when he is departing from this world and setting out toward the next, angels with black faces descend to him from heaven carrying sackcloth, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. Then the angel of death comes and sits by his head and says, 'Wicked soul, come out to the displeasure and anger of Allah.'"He said, "So it scatters throughout his body, and he wrenches it out as a skewer is wrenched out of wet wool, and he takes it. Once he has taken it, they do not leave it in his hand for the blink of an eye before they place it in that sackcloth, and there comes from it a stench like the foulest smell of a corpse ever found on the face of the earth. Then they ascend with it, and they do not pass by any company of angels without their asking, 'Who is this wicked soul?' They answer, 'So-and-so, the son of so-and-so,' using the ugliest names by which he was called in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven with him. They ask that it be opened for him, but it is not opened."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, "The gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle" [Araf 7:40]."Then Allah
says, 'Record his book in Sijjin, in the lowest earth,' and his soul is flung down."Then he recited, "Whoever associates anything with Allah, it is as though he had fallen from the sky and the birds snatched him away, or the wind swept him off to a far distant place" [Hajj 22:31]."Then his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and sit him up.They ask him, 'Who is your Lord?'He says, 'Ah, ah, I do not know.'They ask, 'What is your religion?'He says, 'Ah, ah, I do not know.'They ask, 'Who is this man who was sent among you?'He says, 'Ah, ah, I do not know.'Then a caller calls out from heaven, 'He has lied. Furnish him with bedding from the Fire, and open for him a door to the Fire.' So its heat and scorching wind reach him, and his grave is narrowed upon him until his ribs are driven into one another. Then a man with an ugly face, ugly clothes, and a foul stench comes to him and says, 'Receive the news of what will grieve you. This is the day you were promised.'He asks, 'Who are you? Yours is a face that brings evil.'He answers, 'I am your wicked deeds.'So he says, 'My Lord, do not let the Hour come.'"And he said, "He wrenches it out, and the veins and sinews are torn apart along with it."My father said, "Zaidah reported it in the same way."
