We went out with the Prophet ﷺ to attend the funeral of a man from the Ansar. We arrived at the grave before the niche had been dug, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and we sat around him as if birds were perched on our heads. In his hand was a stick with which he was poking the ground. Then he raised his head and said, "Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave," repeating it two or three times. Then he said, "When the believing servant is about to depart from this world and enter the next, angels with white faces, as if their faces were the sun, descend to him from heaven, carrying with them a shroud from the shrouds of Paradise and embalming scent from the embalming scents of Paradise. They sit at a distance from him as far as the eye can see. Then the angel of death comes and sits at his head and says, 'Pure soul, come out to the forgiveness and pleasure of Allah.'So it flows out like a drop of water flows from the mouth of a waterskin, and he takes it. The moment he takes it, the other angels do not leave it in his hand for even the blink of an eye before they take it and place it in that shroud and that scent. From it comes forth a fragrance like the most pleasant scent of musk ever found on the face of the earth. They ascend with it, and they do not pass any company of angels without those angels asking, 'Who is this pure soul?' They reply, 'So-and-so, son of so-and-so,' using the most beautiful of his names by which he was called in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven. They ask for it to be opened for him, and it is opened. The angels nearest to Allah from each heaven escort him to the next heaven, until he is brought to the seventh heaven. Then Allah
says, 'Record the book of My servant in Illiyyun, and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, to it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them out once again.'So his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him, sit him up, and ask him, 'Who is your Lord?' He replies, 'My Lord is Allah.' They ask him, 'What is your religion?' He replies, 'My religion is Islam.' They ask him, 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He replies, 'He is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' They ask him, 'What is the basis of your knowledge?' He replies, 'I read the Book of Allah, believed in it, and affirmed its truth.'Then a caller from heaven calls out, 'My servant has spoken the truth, so spread out for him a bed from Paradise, clothe him with the garments of Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise.' So some of its breeze and fragrance comes to him, and his grave is widened for him as far as the eye can see. Then a man with a handsome face, beautiful clothing, and pleasant fragrance comes to him and says, 'Receive glad tidings of what will please you. This is the day you were promised.' He asks him, 'Who are you? Your face is the face of one who brings good.' He replies, 'I am your righteous deeds.' So he says, 'My Lord, establish the Hour, that I may return to my family and my wealth.'As for the disbelieving servant, when he is about to depart from this world and enter the next, angels with black faces descend to him from heaven, carrying with them coarse sackcloth, and they sit at a distance from him as far as the eye can see. Then the angel of death comes and sits at his head and says, 'Wicked soul, come out to the wrath and anger of Allah.'So it scatters throughout his body, and he wrenches it out as a metal skewer is wrenched out of wet wool. He takes it, and the moment he takes it, the other angels do not leave it in his hand for even the blink of an eye before they place it in that sackcloth. From it comes forth a stench like the foulest stench of a corpse ever found on the face of the earth. They ascend with it, and they do not pass any company of angels without those angels asking, 'Who is this wicked soul?' They reply, 'So-and-so, son of so-and-so,' using the ugliest of his names by which he was called in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven. They ask for it to be opened for him, but it is not opened."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, "The gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle" [Araf 7:40]."Then Allah
says, 'Record his book in Sijjin, in the lowest earth.' So his soul is hurled down."Then he recited, "And whoever associates partners with Allah, it is as though he had fallen from the sky and been snatched up by birds, or the wind had blown him to a far-off place" [Hajj 22:31]."So his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him, sit him up, and ask him, 'Who is your Lord?' He says, 'Uh, uh, I do not know.' They ask him, 'What is your religion?' He says, 'Uh, uh, I do not know.' They ask him, 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He says, 'Uh, uh, I do not know.'Then a caller from heaven calls out, 'He has lied, so spread out for him a bed from the Fire, and open for him a door to the Fire.' So some of its heat and scorching wind comes to him, and his grave is constricted upon him until his ribs are crushed together. Then a man with an ugly face, ugly clothing, and stinking odor comes to him and says, 'Receive tidings of what will grieve you. This is the day you were promised.' He asks, 'Who are you? Your face is the face of one who brings evil.' He replies, 'I am your wicked deeds.' So he says, 'My Lord, do not establish the Hour.'"
