The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me on the morning of Muzdalifah, "Gather some pebbles for me." So I picked up for him some small pebbles, the size used for flicking. When I placed them in his hand, he said, "Yes, with the likes of these. Beware of going to extremes in religion, for those before you were destroyed only because of their extremism in religion."
حدثنا هشيم أخبرنا عوف عن زياد بن حصين عن أبي العالية
قال لي رسول الله ﷺ غداة جمع هلم القط لي فلقطت له حصيات من حصى الخذف فلما وضعهن في يده قال نعم بأمثال هؤلاء وإياكم والغلو في الدين فإنما هلك من كان قبلكم بالغلو في الدين
Its isnad is sahih. Ziyad bin Husayn Abu Jahma Riyahi is a trustworthy taabi. Abu Aliyah is Rafi, in the diminutive form, bin Mihran Riyahi, and he is a senior taabi and mukhadram, unanimously agreed upon as trustworthy. The hadith is in Jami Saghir 2909, and it is also attributed to Nasai, Ibn Majah, and Hakim.
