Some people came to Abdullah, meaning Ibn Masud, and asked, "What is your opinion concerning a man who married a woman?" and they mentioned the rest of the account.A man from Ashja, whom Mansur said he believed to be Salama bin Yazid, then said, "In a case just like this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave his ruling. A man from among us married a woman from Banu Ruas named Birwa bint Washiq. He set out on a journey, went down into a well, the air there was foul, and he died without having specified a dowry for her. The people came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he ruled that she should receive a dowry equivalent to that of women of her standing, neither less nor more, that she was entitled to inherit, and that she had to observe the waiting period."
