Ibn Masud was approached regarding a man who had married a woman, then died before specifying a dowry for her and before consummating the marriage. He was questioned about her case for a month and said nothing concerning it. Then they asked him again, and he said, "I will give my own opinion on her case. If it is wrong, then it is from me and from Satan, and if it is correct, then it is from Allah. She is entitled to a dowry equivalent to that of women of her standing, she has the right of inheritance, and she must observe the waiting period."A man from the tribe of Ashja stood up and said, "I bear witness that you have judged in her case with the very ruling that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave concerning Birwa bint Washiq."Ibn Masud said, "Bring forward your two witnesses."So Jarrah and Abu Sinan, two men from Ashja, bore witness for him.
