Harith bin Abu Darrar reported,

I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he invited me to Islam. I entered into it and affirmed it. Then he called me to pay zakat, and I affirmed it. I said, "Messenger of Allah, I will return to my people and call them to Islam and to paying zakat. Whoever responds to me, I will gather his zakat. Let the Messenger of Allah ﷺ send a messenger to me at such-and-such a time so that what I have collected of zakat may reach you."When Harith had collected the zakat from those who responded to him, and the time approached at which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had intended to send to him, the messenger was delayed and did not come to him. Harith thought that some displeasure from Allah and His Messenger had befallen him, so he summoned the leaders of his people and said to them, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had set a specific time for me at which he would send his messenger to receive the zakat I had with me. It is not the way of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to break an appointment, and I see no reason for his messenger being held back except some displeasure that has occurred. So let us set out and go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Meanwhile, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent Walid bin Uqba to Harith to collect the zakat he had gathered. When Walid had traveled part of the way, he became afraid and turned back. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, Harith refused to give me the zakat and wanted to kill me."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a force against Harith. Harith was already advancing with his companions when the force met him. They had set out from Medina, and Harith encountered them on the way. They said, "This is Harith." When he came up to them, he asked them, "To whom were you sent?"They replied, "To you."He asked, "Why?"They said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Walid bin Uqba to you, and he claimed that you refused him the zakat and wanted to kill him."He said, "No, by the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, I never saw him at all, nor did he come to me."When Harith entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Prophet asked, "Did you withhold the zakat and intend to kill my messenger?"Harith replied, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I never saw him, nor did he come to me. I only came when the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delayed in reaching me, fearing that some displeasure from Allah and His Messenger had occurred."He said, Then Surat al-Hujurat was revealed, "Believers, if a transgressor brings you news, verify it, lest you harm a people in ignorance and then become regretful over what you have done" up to this point, "as a favor from Allah and a blessing. And Allah is Knowing and Wise" [Hujurat 49:6–8].

حدثنا محمد بن سابق حدثنا عيسى بن دينار حدثنا أبي أنه سمع

الحارث بن أبي ضرار الخزاعي قال

قدمت على رسول الله ﷺ فدعاني إلى الإسلام فدخلت فيه وأقررت به فدعاني إلى الزكاة فأقررت بها وقلت يا رسول الله أرجع إلى قومي فأدعوهم إلى الإسلام وأداء الزكاة فمن استجاب لي جمعت زكاته فيرسل إلي رسول الله ﷺ رسولا لإبان كذا وكذا ليأتيك ما جمعت من الزكاة فلما جمع الحارث الزكاة ممن استجاب له وبلغ الإبان الذي أراد رسول الله ﷺ أن يبعث إليه احتبس عليه الرسول فلم يأته فظن الحارث أنه قد حدث فيه سخطة من الله عز وجل ورسوله فدعا بسروات قومه فقال لهم إن رسول الله ﷺ كان وقت لي وقتا يرسل إلي رسوله ليقبض ما كان عندي من الزكاة وليس من رسول الله ﷺ الخلف ولا أرى حبس رسوله إلا من سخطة كانت فانطلقوا فنأتي رسول الله ﷺ وبعث رسول الله ﷺ الوليد بن عقبة إلى الحارث ليقبض ما كان عنده مما جمع من الزكاة فلما أن سار الوليد حتى بلغ بعض الطريق فرق فرجع فأتى رسول الله ﷺ وقال يا رسول الله إن الحارث منعني الزكاة وأراد قتلي فضرب رسول الله ﷺ البعث إلى الحارث فأقبل الحارث بأصحابه إذ استقبل البعث وفصل من المدينة لقيهم الحارث فقالوا هذا الحارث فلما غشيهم قال لهم إلى من بعثتم قالوا إليك قال ولم قالوا إن رسول الله ﷺ كان بعث إليك الوليد بن عقبة فزعم أنك منعته الزكاة وأردت قتله قال لا والذي بعث محمدا بالحق ما رأيته بتة ولا أتاني فلما دخل الحارث على رسول الله ﷺ قال منعت الزكاة وأردت قتل رسولي قال لا والذي بعثك بالحق ما رأيته ولا أتاني وما أقبلت إلا حين احتبس علي رسول رسول الله ﷺ خشيت أن تكون كانت سخطة من الله عز وجل ورسوله قال فنزلت الحجرات {يا أيها الذين آمنوا إن جاءكم فاسق بنبإ فتبينوا أن تصيبوا قوما بجهالة فتصبحوا على ما فعلتم نادمين} إلى هذا المكان {فضلا من الله ونعمة والله عليم حكيم}
