Yahya bin Yamar and Humayd bin Abdul-Rahman reported,

We met Abdullah bin Umar and mentioned to him the issue of divine decree and what people were saying about it.He said, "When you return to them, tell them that Ibn Umar disowns you and you are disowned by him." He said this three times. Then he said, Umar bin Khattab رضي الله عنه told me that while they were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, a man approached on foot, with a handsome face and beautiful hair, wearing white garments. The people looked at one another and said, "We do not recognize this man, and he does not appear to be a traveler."Then he said, "Messenger of Allah, may I come to you?"The Prophet replied, "Yes."He came forward, placed his knees against the Prophet's knees and his hands on his thighs, and asked, "What is Islam?"The Prophet said, "To bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to pay zakat, to fast Ramadan, and to perform pilgrimage to the House."The man asked, "What is faith?"He said, "To believe in Allah, His angels, Paradise, the Fire, the resurrection after death, and the divine decree in its entirety."The man asked, "What is excellence?"He said, "To worship Allah as though you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He surely sees you."The man asked, "When is the Hour?"He said, "The one questioned about it knows no more than the one asking."The man asked, "What are its signs?"He said, "When the naked, barefoot, destitute shepherds of sheep compete in raising tall buildings, and when slave women give birth to their mistresses."Then the Prophet said, "Bring the man back to me." They searched for him but saw nothing. He waited two or three days, then said, "Son of Khattab, do you know who was asking about such and such?"I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "That was Jibril. He came to teach you your religion."A man from Juhaynah or Mazina asked him, "Messenger of Allah, in what do we labor? In something already determined and past, or in something newly begun now?"He said, "In something already determined and past."A man, or someone among the people, asked, "Messenger of Allah, then why do we work?"He said, "The people of Paradise are made to find ease in the deeds of the people of Paradise, and the people of the Fire are made to find ease in the deeds of the people of the Fire."Yahya said, He said it is just so, meaning as I recited it to him.
