I was sitting with Abdullah and Abu Musa Ashari when Abu Musa said to Abdullah, "If a man cannot find water, should he not pray?"Abdullah replied, "No."Abu Musa said, "Don't you remember when Ammar said to Umar, 'Don't you recall when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent you and me on an errand involving some camels, and I became ritually impure and rolled in the dust? When I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, he laughed and said, "It would have been enough for you to do this." Then he struck the ground with his palms, wiped them together, and wiped his face one time with a single strike.'"Abdullah said, "Surely you saw that Umar was not satisfied with that."Abu Musa then said to him, "But what about this verse in Surah an-Nisa, 'and you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth' [Nisa 4:43]?"Abdullah did not know what to say, then he said, "If we granted them this concession of tayammum, one of them, whenever the water felt cold against his skin, would be quick to use tayammum."Affan said, Yahya, meaning Ibn Saeed, rejected this report. So I asked Hafs bin Giyath about it, and he said, "Amash used to narrate it to us from Salama bin Kuhayl," and he mentioned Abu Waail.

كنت قاعدا مع عبد الله وأبي موسى الأشعري فقال أبو موسى لعبد الله لو أن رجلا لم يجد الماء لم يصل فقال عبد الله لا فقال أبو موسى أما تذكر إذ قال عمار لعمر ألا تذكر إذ بعثني رسول الله ﷺ وإياك في إبل فأصابتني جنابة فتمرغت في التراب فلما رجعت إلى رسول الله ﷺ أخبرته فضحك رسول الله ﷺ وقال إنما كان يكفيك أن تقول هكذا وضرب بكفيه إلى الأرض ثم مسح كفيه جميعا ومسح وجهه مسحة واحدة بضربة واحدة فقال عبد الله لا جرم ما رأيت عمر قنع بذلك قال فقال له أبو موسى فكيف بهذه الآية في سورة النساء {فلم تجدوا ماء فتيمموا صعيدا طيبا} قال فما درى عبد الله ما يقول وقال لو رخصنا لهم في التيمم لأوشك أحدهم إن برد الماء على جلده أن يتيمم قال عفان وأنكره يحيى يعني ابن سعيد فسألت حفص بن غياث فقال كان الأعمش يحدثنا به عن سلمة بن كهيل وذكر أبا وائل
