I was sitting with Abu Musa and Abdullah when Abu Musa said, "Father of Abdul-Rahman, what do you say if a man cannot find water and has been in a state of major ritual impurity for a month? Should he perform tayammum?"Abdullah replied, "No, even if he does not find water for a month."Abu Musa said to him, "Then what do you do with this verse in Surah al-Maidah, 'and you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth' [Maidah 5:6]?"Abdullah said, "If they were granted this concession, then whenever the water felt cold to them they would be quick to perform tayammum with earth and pray."Abu Musa said to him, "You only disliked this for that reason?"Abdullah said, "Yes."Abu Musa said to him, "Have you not heard Ammar's statement? He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand, and I became junub but could not find water, so I rolled in the dust as an animal rolls. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said, It would have sufficed you to do this,' and he struck his hand on the ground, then wiped one hand against the other, then wiped his face with them." Amash did not include the palms.Abdullah said to him, "Did you not see that Umar himself was not convinced by Ammar's statement?"Abu Muawiya once said, "He struck his hand on the ground, then shook it off, then struck his left hand on his right and his right on his left over the palms, then wiped his face."

كنت جالسا مع أبي موسى وعبد الله قال فقال أبو موسى يا أبا عبد الرحمن أرأيت لو أن رجلا لم يجد الماء وقد أجنب شهرا ما كان يتيمم قال لا ولو لم يجد الماء شهرا قال فقال له أبو موسى فكيف تصنعون بهذه الآية في سورة المائدة {فلم تجدوا ماء فتيمموا صعيدا طيبا} قال فقال عبد الله لو رخص لهم في هذا لأوشكوا إذا برد عليهم الماء أن يتيمموا الصعيد ثم يصلوا قال فقال له أبو موسى إنما كرهتم ذا لهذا قال نعم قال له أبو موسى ألم تسمع لقول عمار بعثني رسول الله ﷺ في حاجة فأجنبت فلم أجد الماء فتمرغت في الصعيد كما تمرغ الدابة ثم أتيت رسول الله ﷺ فذكرت ذلك له فقال إنما كان يكفيك أن تقول وضرب بيده على الأرض ثم مسح كل واحدة منهما بصاحبتها ثم مسح بها وجهه لم يجز الأعمش الكفين قال فقال له عبد الله ألم تزعموا لم يقنع بقول عمار وقال أبو معاوية مرة قال فضرب بيده على الأرض ثم نفضها ثم ضرب بشماله على يمينه وبيمينه على شماله على الكفين ثم مسح وجهه
