A man delivered a speech in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has been guided rightly, and whoever disobeys them has gone astray."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What a poor speaker you are. Say instead, 'And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger.'"
حدثنا وكيع حدثنا سفيان عن عبد العزيز يعني ابن رفيع عن تميم بن طرفة
أن رجلا خطب عند النبي ﷺ فقال من يطع الله ورسوله فقد رشد ومن يعصهما فقد غوى فقال رسول الله ﷺ بئس الخطيب أنت قل ومن يعص الله ورسوله
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abdul-Aziz bin Rafi al-Asadi, Abu Abdul-Malik, of Makkah and later of Kufah, is trustworthy, and scholars have praised him. His hadith is found among the group of major hadith collectors, and the hadith was narrated by Muslim, 2/594, no. 870, in the chapter on Friday prayer, and in similar wording by Abu Dawud, 1/288, no. 1099, in the chapter on prayer, on a man delivering a sermon while leaning on a bow, and by Nasai, 6/90, no. 3279, in the chapter on marriage, on what is disliked in the marriage sermon, and by Tayalisi, 1/20, no. 13, in the chapter on the oneness of Allah, on what has been said concerning the greatness of Allah Almighty.
