The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for me to bring water, so I went to a tent and found inside it an Arabi woman. I said to her, "This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he wants water to perform ablution. Do you have any water?"She replied, "May my father and mother be ransom for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, the sky shades no soul and the earth carries no soul dearer or more beloved to me than his. But this water-skin is made from the hide of a dead animal, and I would not wish to defile the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with it."I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what she had said. He said, "Go back to her. If she has tanned it, then tanning has purified it."So I went back to her and told her this. She said, "Yes, by Allah, I have indeed tanned it." So I brought him water from it. He was wearing that day a Syrian cloak, leather socks, and a head covering. He slipped his hands out from beneath the cloak because its sleeves were too narrow, and he performed ablution, wiping over the head covering and the leather socks.
