I entered the congregational mosque, and there was Amr bin Wahb Thaqafi who had entered from the other side. We met near the middle of the mosque, and he began the conversation. He used to love sharing whatever good he could pass on to me, so he began by saying, "We were with Mughira bin Shuba." What further confirmed the report's authenticity in my mind was the manner in which he introduced it.He said, "We asked, 'Has any man from this community led the Prophet ﷺ in prayer other than Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him?'Mughira replied, 'Yes. We were on such-and-such a journey, and during the predawn hours the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned his mount aside and rode off. I followed him, and he disappeared from my sight for a while, then he came back and asked, "Do you need anything?"I said, "I have no need, Messenger of Allah."He asked, "Do you have any water?"I said, "Yes." So I poured water for him, and he washed his hands, then washed his face. Then he went to roll up his sleeves, but he was wearing a Syrian cloak that was too narrow, so he slipped his hands inside and brought them out from beneath the cloak. He washed his face, washed his arms, wiped his forelock, wiped over his turban, and wiped over his leather socks.Then we caught up with the people, and the prayer had already begun, with Abdul-Rahman bin Awf leading them. He had completed one rakah, so I went to inform him of the Prophet's ﷺ arrival, but the Prophet ﷺ stopped me. So we prayed the rakah we caught with them and then made up the one we had missed.'"
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا هشام
دخلت مسجد الجامع فإذا عمرو بن وهب الثقفي قد دخل من الناحية الأخرى فالتقينا قريبا من وسط المسجد فابتدأني بالحديث وكان يحب ما ساق إلي من خير فابتدأني بالحديث فقال كنا عند المغيرة بن شعبة فزاده في نفسي تصديقا الذي قرب به الحديث قال قلنا هل أم النبي ﷺ رجل من هذه الأمة غير أبي بكر الصديق رضي الله تعالى عنه قال نعم كنا في سفر كذا وكذا فلما كان في السحر ضرب رسول الله ﷺ عنق راحلته وانطلق فتبعته فتغيب عني ساعة ثم جاء فقال حاجتك فقلت ليست لي حاجة يا رسول الله قال هل من ماء قلت نعم فصببت عليه فغسل يديه ثم غسل وجهه ثم ذهب يحسر عن ذراعيه وكانت عليه جبة له شامية فضاقت فأدخل يديه فأخرجهما من تحت الجبة فغسل وجهه وغسل ذراعيه ومسح بناصيته ومسح على العمامة وعلى الخفين ثم لحقنا الناس وقد أقيمت الصلاة وعبد الرحمن بن عوف يؤمهم وقد صلى ركعة فذهبت لأوذنه فنهاني فصلينا التي أدركنا وقضينا التي سبقنا بها
