He had come in from the other side, and we met near the middle of the masjid. He began speaking first, and he was pleased with the good report he was bringing me, so he started the account and said, "We were sitting with Mughira bin Shuba." What increased my confidence in him was how short the chain was by which he brought the report.He continued, "We asked, 'Did any man of this community ever lead the Prophet ﷺ in prayer besides Abu Bakr Siddiq, may Allah the Exalted be pleased with him?'"Mughira replied, "Yes. We were on such and such a journey, and when the last part of the night came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned his mount aside by the neck and rode off. I followed him. He was out of my sight for a while, then he came back and asked, 'Do you need something?'I said, "I need nothing, Messenger of Allah."He asked, "Is there any water?"I said, "Yes," and I poured it out for him. He washed his hands, then washed his face, then went to push the sleeves back from his forearms. He was wearing a Syrian cloak of his, and it was too narrow, so he slipped his hands inside and brought them out from underneath the cloak. He washed his face, washed his forearms, wiped his forelock, and wiped over his turban and over his shoes.Then we caught up with the people, and the prayer had already begun, with Abdul-Rahman bin Awf leading them. He had already prayed one rakat. I went to let him know, but the Prophet ﷺ stopped me. So we prayed the portion we caught up with, and we made up the portion we had missed.
