On the pulpit at Rhodes, when he had flogged the two men who had stolen from the spoils of the people, he said, "Nothing prevented me from cutting off their hands except that Busr bin Artah once came across a man called Misdar who had stolen during a military campaign. He flogged him but did not cut off his hand, and he said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from carrying out amputation during military campaigns.'"

على المنبر برودس حين جلد الرجلين اللذين سرقا غنائم الناس فقال إنه لم يمنعني من قطعهما إلا أن بسر بن أرطأة وجد رجلا سرق في الغزو يقال له مصدر فجلده ولم يقطع يده وقال نهانا رسول الله ﷺ عن القطع في الغزو

The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 4/142, no. 4804, in "Hudud, a man stealing during a military expedition," Tirmidhi in "Hudud," 4/53, no. 1450, where he said it is unique (gharib), Nasai in "Cutting off the thief's hand," 8/91, no. 4979, Darimi in "Sair," 2/302, no. 2492, and Tabarani in Kabir, 2/23, no. 1195.
