Bahz, on a previous occasion, said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said,"To proceed. This world has announced its departure and turned away in haste. Nothing remains of it except a residue like the last drops in a vessel that its owner drains. You are moving from it to an abode that has no end, so move with the best of what is with you. It has been mentioned to us that a stone is cast from the edge of Hell and tumbles down through it for seventy years without reaching its bottom. By Allah, it shall be filled. Are you astonished? By Allah, it has been mentioned to us that the distance between two leaves of the gates of Paradise is a journey of forty years, and a day will come upon it when it will be packed with crowds.I have seen myself as one of seven with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, having no food but the leaves of trees, until our mouths became sore. I picked up a cloak and divided it between Saad and myself, so I wore half as a lower garment and he wore the other half. Today there is not one of us who has not become a governor of one of the great cities. I seek refuge in Allah from being great in my own eyes yet small in the sight of Allah.There has never been a prophethood but that it passed through stages until its end became a kingdom. You will soon test, or come to know, the rulers who follow us."
حدثنا بهز بن أسد حدثنا سليمان بن المغيرة حدثنا حميد يعني ابن هلال عن خالد بن عمير قال خطب
بهز وقال قبل هذه المرة خطبنا رسول الله ﷺ قال فحمد الله وأثنى عليه ثم قال أما بعد فإن الدنيا قد آذنت بصرم وولت حذاء ولم يبق منها إلا صبابة كصبابة الإناء يتصابها صاحبها وإنكم منتقلون منها إلى دار لا زوال لها فانتقلوا بخير ما بحضرتكم فإنه قد ذكر لنا أن الحجر يلقى من شفير جهنم فيهوي فيها سبعين عاما ما يدرك لها قعرا والله لتملؤنه أفعجبتم والله لقد ذكر لنا أن ما بين مصارع الجنة مسيرة أربعين عاما وليأتين عليه يوم كظيظ الزحام ولقد رأيتني سابع سبعة مع رسول الله ﷺ ما لنا طعام إلا ورق الشجر حتى قرحت أشداقنا وإني التقطت بردة فشققتها بيني وبين سعد فأتزر بنصفها وائتزرت بنصفها فما أصبح منا أحد اليوم إلا أصبح أمير مصر من الأمصار وإني أعوذ بالله أن أكون في نفسي عظيما وعند الله صغيرا وإنها لم تكن نبوة قط إلا تناسخت حتى يكون عاقبتها ملكا وستبلون أو ستخبرون الأمراء بعدنا
