He and Fadl came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that he would arrange marriages for them and appoint them to collect the zakat, from which they would receive a share. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This zakat is nothing but the dirt of people, and it is not lawful for Muhammad nor for the family of Muhammad."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to Mahmiyah al-Zubaydi about marrying off Fadl, and he spoke to Nawfal bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib about marrying off Abdul-Muttalib bin Rabia, and he spoke to Mahmiyah bin Jaz al-Zubaydi, whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to appoint over the fifths of war booty. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed him to provide their dowries from the fifth, an amount which Abdullah bin Harith did not specify. At the beginning of this hadith, it is mentioned that Ali met the two of them and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will not appoint you."They replied, "This is just your envy."Ali said, "I am Abu Hasan of the people. I will not leave until I see what response he gives you."When they spoke to him, he remained silent, and Zaynab began waving with her garment to indicate that he was attending to their need.
