He informed him that Rabia bin Harith and Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib once met and said, "By Allah, if we were to send these two young men," meaning myself and Fadl bin Abbas, "to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that he would put them in charge of these alms, they would discharge what others discharge and gain what others gain in benefit."While they were discussing this, Ali bin Abu Talib came along and asked, "What are you two planning?"They told him what they intended.Ali said, "Do not do it. By Allah, he will not do this."Rabia said to him, "You are only doing this out of envy toward us. You have kept the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and gained the honor of marrying into his family, yet we have not envied you for that."Ali replied, "I am Abu Hasan. Send them, then." And he lay down.When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had prayed Zuhr, we hurried ahead of him to his chamber and stood there until he passed by. He took us by our hands and said, "Out with whatever you are concealing." Then he entered, and we entered with him. He was at that time in the house of Zaynab bint Jahsh.We spoke to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, we have come so that you may appoint us over these alms, that we may gain what others gain in benefit and deliver to you what others deliver."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent and raised his head toward the ceiling of the room for so long that we wanted to speak to him again. Then Zaynab signaled to us from behind her curtain, as if forbidding us from speaking to him.He then turned to us and said, "Indeed, alms are not lawful for Muhammad nor for the family of Muhammad. They are merely the dirt of the people. Call for me Mahmiyah bin Jaz," who was in charge of the one-fifth, "and Abu Sufyan bin Harith."The two came, and he said to Mahmiyah, "Pay the dowry on behalf of these two from the one-fifth."
حدثنا يعقوب وسعد قالا حدثنا أبي عن صالح عن الزهري عن عبد الله بن عبد الله بن الحارث بن نوفل بن الحارث بن عبد المطلب أخبره أن
أخبره أنه اجتمع ربيعة بن الحارث وعباس بن عبد المطلب فقالا والله لو بعثنا هذين الغلامين فقال لي وللفضل بن عباس إلى رسول الله ﷺ فأمرهما على هذه الصدقات فأديا ما يؤدي الناس وأصابا ما يصيب الناس من المنفعة فبينما هما في ذلك جاء علي بن أبي طالب فقال ماذا تريدان فأخبراه بالذي أرادا قال فلا تفعلا فوالله ما هو بفاعل فقال لم تصنع هذا فما هذا منك إلا نفاسة علينا لقد صحبت رسول الله ﷺ ونلت صهره فما نفسنا ذلك عليك قال فقال أنا أبو حسن أرسلوهما ثم اضطجع قال فلما صلى الظهر سبقناه إلى الحجرة فقمنا عندها حتى مر بنا فأخذ بأيدينا ثم قال أخرجا ما تصرران ودخل فدخلنا معه وهو حينئذ في بيت زينب بنت جحش قال فكلمناه فقلنا يا رسول الله جئناك لتؤمرنا على هذه الصدقات فنصيب ما يصيب الناس من المنفعة ونؤدي إليك ما يؤدي الناس قال فسكت رسول الله ﷺ ورفع رأسه إلى سقف البيت حتى أردنا أن نكلمه قال فأشارت إلينا زينب من وراء حجابها كأنها تنهانا عن كلامه وأقبل فقال ألا إن الصدقة لا تنبغي لمحمد ولا لآل محمد إنما هي أوساخ الناس ادعوا لي محمية بن جزء وكان على العشر وأبا سفيان بن الحارث فأتيا فقال لمحمية أصدق عنهما من الخمس
