Abu Ayub Khalid bin Zayd al-Ansari, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, came to us in Egypt on a military campaign. Uqba bin Amir bin Abs al-Juhani had been appointed over us by Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan.Uqba bin Amir delayed the Maghrib prayer. When he finished praying, Abu Ayub al-Ansari rose and went to him and said, "Uqba, is this how you saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray Maghrib? Did you not hear him say, 'My nation will continue to be in goodness,' or 'upon the natural way, so long as they do not delay Maghrib until the stars become entangled'?"Uqba replied, "Yes indeed."Abu Ayub asked, "Then what made you do what you did?"Uqba said, "I was occupied."Abu Ayub said, "By Allah, my only concern is that people might think you saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing this."
حدثنا يعقوب قال حدثنا أبي عن ابن إسحاق قال حدثني يزيد بن أبي حبيب المصري
قدم علينا أبو أيوب خالد بن زيد الأنصاري صاحب رسول الله ﷺ مصر غازيا وكان عقبة بن عامر بن عبس الجهني أمره علينا معاوية بن أبي سفيان قال فحبس عقبة بن عامر بالمغرب فلما صلى قام إليه أبو أيوب الأنصاري فقال له يا عقبة أهكذا رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يصلي المغرب أما سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ يقول لا تزال أمتي بخير أو على الفطرة ما لم يؤخروا المغرب حتى تشتبك النجوم قال فقال بلى قال فما حملك على ما صنعت قال شغلت قال فقال أبو أيوب أما والله ما بي إلا أن يظن الناس أنك رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يصنع هذا
