By Allah, I was the first among the Arabs to shoot an arrow in the cause of Allah. We used to fight alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with no food to eat except the leaves of the hubla tree and this samur tree, to the point that one of us would relieve himself like a sheep does, his droppings unmixed. And now Banu Asad come to instruct me about religion. If that were so, I would have failed and my deeds would have been in vain.
حدثنا يزيد بن هارون أنبأنا إسماعيل عن قيس قال سمعت
والله إني لأول العرب رمى بسهم في سبيل الله لقد كنا نغزو مع رسول الله ﷺ وما لنا طعام نأكله إلا ورق الحبلة وهذا السمر حتى إن أحدنا ليضع كما تضع الشاة ماله خلط ثم أصبحت بنو أسد يعزروني على الدين لقد خبت إذن وضل عملي
Its isnad is sahih, and it is a repetition of 1566. In H and Ha, it reads "Ismail bin Qays," which is an error. We corrected it from K and from what has come before. Ismail is Ibn Abu Khalid. Qays is Ibn Abu Hazim.
