Abdullah bin Sahl, the brother of Banu Haritha, set out with a small group from Banu Haritha to Khaybar to bring back dates from there. Abdullah bin Sahl was attacked, his neck was broken, and he was thrown into one of the water channels among the springs of Khaybar. His companions missed him, searched for him, and when they found him, they buried him.They then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. His brother Abdul-Rahman bin Sahl came forward along with his two cousins Huwaysa and Muhaysa, both of whom were older than Abdul-Rahman. Since Abdul-Rahman was the one who had taken the lead in the matter as the relative of the slain man, he began speaking to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before his two cousins Huwaysa and Muhaysa.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let the eldest speak, let the eldest speak."So Abdul-Rahman stepped back, and Huwaysa spoke, then Muhaysa spoke, then Abdul-Rahman spoke. They said, "Messenger of Allah, our companion was attacked and killed, and there is no enemy at Khaybar except the Jews."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Will you name his killer, then swear fifty oaths against him, so that we may hand him over to you?"They said, "Messenger of Allah, we cannot swear about something we did not witness."He said, "Then they will swear fifty oaths to you, clearing themselves of your companion's blood."They said, "Messenger of Allah, we will not accept the oaths of the Jews. The disbelief they are in is too great for them to hesitate at swearing falsely."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid his blood-money himself, one hundred she-camels.Sahl said, "By Allah, I will never forget a young red she-camel among them that kicked me as I was driving them along."

خرج عبد الله بن سهل أخو بني حارثة يعني في نفر من بني حارثة إلى خيبر يمتارون منها تمرا قال فعدي على عبد الله بن سهل فكسرت عنقه ثم طرح في منهر من مناهر عيون خيبر وفقده أصحابه فالتمسوه حتى وجدوه فغيبوه قال ثم قدموا على رسول الله ﷺ فأقبل أخوه عبد الرحمن بن سهل وابنا عمه حويصة ومحيصة وهما كانا أسن من عبد الرحمن وكان عبد الرحمن إذا أقدم القوم وصاحب الدم فتقدم لذلك فكلم رسول الله ﷺ قبل ابني عمه حويصة ومحيصة قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ الكبر الكبر فاستأخر عبد الرحمن وتكلم حويصة ثم تكلم محيصة ثم تكلم عبد الرحمن فقالوا يا رسول الله عدي على صاحبنا فقتل وليس بخيبر عدو إلا يهود قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ تسمون قاتلكم ثم تحلفون عليه خمسين يمينا ثم تسلمه قال فقالوا يا رسول الله ما كنا لنحلف على ما لم نشهد قال فيحلفون لكم خمسين يمينا ويبرءون من دم صاحبكم قالوا يا رسول الله ما كنا لنقبل أيمان يهود ما هم فيه من الكفر أعظم من أن يحلفوا على إثم قال فوداه رسول الله ﷺ من عنده مائة ناقة قال يقول سهل فوالله ما أنسى بكرة منها حمراء ركضتني وأنا أحوزها
