Sahl bin Abu Hathma and some men from the elders of his people reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Huwaysa, Muhaysa, and Abdul-Rahman, "Will you swear an oath and thereby establish your right to the blood of your companion?"They replied, "No."He asked, "Then shall the Jews swear?"They said, "They are not Muslims."So the Prophet ﷺ paid the blood-money for him from his own resources.

أن سهل بن أبي حثمة أخبره ورجال من كبراء قومه أن رسول الله ﷺ قال لحويصة ومحيصة وعبد الرحمن أتحلفون وتستحقون دم صاحبكم قالوا لا قال فتحلف يهود قالوا ليسوا بمسلمين فوداه النبي ﷺ من عنده
Its isnad is sahih. Its narrators are leading jurists, and no isnad among the isnads comes close to it, for it brought together the three imams, and joined with them Ibn Abu Layla, who is also a jurist. This has already been discussed at 16036.
