There was a man during the time of Umar bin Khattab who had asked him for something, and Umar gave it to him. The man said, "Abdullah bin Unays, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sat with us in his gathering, in the gathering of Juhaynah." He said this was during Ramadan.He continued, "We said to him, 'Abu Yahya, did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding this blessed night?'He replied, 'Yes. We sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the end of this month and said to him, "Messenger of Allah, when should we seek this blessed night?"He answered, "Seek it this very night."This was on the evening of the twenty-third night.A man from the group said to him, "So is it the first of the eight, Messenger of Allah?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "It is not the first of the eight, but rather the first of the seven, for the month will not be complete."'"
قال حدثنا يعقوب قال حدثني أبي عن ابن إسحاق قال حدثني معاذ بن عبد الله بن خبيب الجهني
كان رجل في زمان عمر بن الخطاب قد سأله فأعطاه قال جلس معنا عبد الله بن أنيس صاحب رسول الله ﷺ في مجلسه في مجلس جهينة قال في رمضان قال فقلنا له يا أبا يحيى سمعت من رسول الله ﷺ في هذه الليلة المباركة من شيء فقال نعم جلسنا مع رسول الله ﷺ في آخر هذا الشهر فقلنا له يا رسول الله متى نلتمس هذه الليلة المباركة قال التمسوها هذه الليلة وقال وذلك مساء ليلة ثلاث وعشرين فقال له رجل من القوم وهي إذا يا رسول الله أول ثمان قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ إنها ليست بأول ثمان ولكنها أول السبع إن الشهر لا يتم
