The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned me and said, "I have been informed that Khalid bin Sufyan bin Nubayh is gathering people against me to wage war on me, and he is at Uranah. Go to him and kill him."I said, "Messenger of Allah, describe him to me so I may recognize him."He said, "When you see him, you will feel a shudder run through you."So I set out with my sword strapped on, until I came upon him at Uranah with some women travelers, scouting out a campsite for them. It was around the time of the afternoon prayer. When I saw him, I felt exactly the shudder the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had described. I approached him, but I feared that some struggle might break out between us that would distract me from my prayer, so I prayed while walking toward him, gesturing with my head for the bowing and prostration. When I reached him, he asked, "Who are you?"I said, "A man from the Arabs who heard about you and the force you are gathering against this man, so he came to join you."He said, "Yes, I am indeed at that."I walked with him for a while, and when I had the chance, I struck him with the sword and killed him. Then I left, with his women travelers throwing themselves over his body in grief. When I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he saw me, he said, "May the face succeed!"I said, "I have killed him, Messenger of Allah."He said, "You have spoken the truth."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and went with me into his house, where he gave me a staff and said, "Keep this with you, Abdullah bin Unays."I went out among the people with it, and they asked, "What is this staff?"I said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave it to me and ordered me to keep it."They said, "Why don't you go back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him about that?"So I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, why did you give me this staff?"He said, "It is a sign between you and me on the Day of Resurrection. The fewest people on that day, the Day of Resurrection, will be those who lean upon staffs."So Abdullah fastened it to his sword, and it remained with him until he died. He then gave instructions that it be wrapped within his shroud, and we buried them together.
