A man reported,

I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of the roads of Madinah, and he was wearing a cotton lower garment with a frayed hem.I said, "Upon you be peace, Messenger of Allah."He replied, "'Upon you be peace' is the greeting of the dead. 'Upon you be peace' is the greeting of the dead. 'Upon you be peace' is the greeting of the dead. Rather say, 'Peace be upon you. Peace be upon you,'" repeating it two or three times in this manner.I asked him about the lower garment, saying, "Where should I wear it?"He drew up the back of his garment to the bone of his shin and said, "Wear it here. If you refuse, then here, lower than that. If you refuse, then here, above the ankles. If you refuse, then know that Allah does not love anyone who is arrogant and boastful."I then asked him about acts of kindness, and he said, "Do not belittle any act of kindness, even if it be giving a piece of rope, or giving the strap of a sandal, or pouring some of your bucket into the vessel of someone seeking water, or removing something harmful from the path of people, or meeting your brother with a cheerful face, or meeting your brother and greeting him with peace, or comforting the lonely stranger in the land. And if a man insults you with something he knows about you, while you know something similar about him, do not insult him back, so that the reward will be yours and the sin will be his. Whatever pleases your ear to hear, act upon it, and whatever displeases your ear to hear, avoid it."

عن رجل من قومه قال

لقيت رسول الله ﷺ في بعض طرق المدينة وعليه إزار من قطن منتثر الحاشية فقلت عليك السلام يا رسول الله فقال إن عليك السلام تحية الموتى إن عليك السلام تحية الموتى إن عليك السلام تحية الموتى سلام عليكم سلام عليكم مرتين أو ثلاثا هكذا قال سألت عن الإزار فقلت أين أتزر فأقنع ظهره بعظم ساقه وقال هاهنا اتزر فإن أبيت فهاهنا أسفل من ذلك فإن أبيت فهاهنا فوق الكعبين فإن أبيت فإن الله عز وجل لا يحب كل مختال فخور قال وسألته عن المعروف فقال لا تحقرن من المعروف شيئا ولو أن تعطي صلة الحبل ولو أن تعطي شسع النعل ولو أن تنزع من دلوك في إناء المستسقي ولو أن تنحي الشيء من طريق الناس يؤذيهم ولو أن تلقى أخاك ووجهك إليه منطلق ولو أن تلقى أخاك فتسلم عليه ولو أن تؤنس الوحشان في الأرض وإن سبك رجل بشيء يعلمه فيك وأنت تعلم فيه نحوه فلا تسبه فيكون أجره لك ووزره عليه وما سر أذنك أن تسمعه فاعمل به وما ساء أذنك أن تسمعه فاجتنبه
