I set out to lodge a complaint against Ala bin Hadrami before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. As I passed through Rabadhah, I came upon an old woman from Bani Tamim who had been stranded there. She said to me, "Abdullah, I have a need to bring before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Will you carry me to him?"So I took her along, and we arrived at Madinah. The mosque was packed with people, a black banner was fluttering, and Bilal stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a sword strapped on.I asked, "What is happening with the people?"They replied, "He intends to dispatch Amr bin As on an expedition."So I sat down. He then entered his dwelling, or he said, his quarters. I asked permission to enter, and he granted it. I went in and gave the greeting of peace.He asked, "Was there anything between you and Bani Tamim?"I said, "Yes, and we had the upper hand over them. I passed by an old woman from Bani Tamim who was stranded, and she asked me to carry her to you. She is now at the door."He gave her permission to enter, and she came in. I said, "Messenger of Allah, if you see fit to set a barrier between us and Bani Tamim, make it Dahna."The old woman flared up and rose abruptly. She said, "Messenger of Allah, then where will you push your own kin Mudar?"I said, "My case is just as the saying of the ancients goes, a goat carrying its own death. I carried this woman along, not realizing she would be my adversary. I seek refuge in Allah and His Messenger from being like the envoy of Aad."He said, "Indeed? And what was the envoy of Aad?" though he knew the story better than the one telling it. But he wished to hear it told.I said, "The people of Aad were struck by drought, so they sent an envoy of theirs called Qayl. He passed by Muawiya bin Bakr and stayed with him a month, while Muawiya served him wine and two singing girls called the two Jaradahs entertained him with song. When the month was over, he went out to the mountains of Tihamah and called out, 'O Allah, You know I have not come to a sick man to cure him, nor to a captive to ransom him. O Allah, give Aad to drink as You used to give them to drink.' Then black clouds passed over him, and a voice called from them, 'Choose.' He pointed to a black cloud among them, and a voice called from it, 'Take it as ashes, ground to dust, leaving no one of Aad alive.' It has reached me that the wind sent against them was no more than what could pass through this ring of mine, until they all perished."Abu Waail said, "And he spoke the truth."He said, "So whenever a woman or a man would dispatch an envoy on their behalf, they would say, 'Do not be like the envoy of Aad.'"
حدثنا زيد بن الحباب قال حدثني أبو المنذر سلام بن سليمان النحوي قال حدثنا عاصم بن أبي النجود عن أبي وائل
خرجت أشكو العلاء بن الحضرمي إلى رسول الله ﷺ فمررت بالربذة فإذا عجوز من بني تميم منقطع بها فقالت لي يا عبد الله إن لي إلى رسول الله ﷺ حاجة فهل أنت مبلغي إليه قال فحملتها فأتيت المدينة فإذا المسجد غاص بأهله وإذا راية سوداء تخفق وبلال متقلد السيف بين يدي رسول الله ﷺ فقلت ما شأن الناس قالوا يريد أن يبعث عمرو بن العاص وجها قال فجلست قال فدخل منزله أو قال رحله فاستأذنت عليه فأذن لي فدخلت فسلمت فقال هل كان بينكم وبين بني تميم شيء قال فقلت نعم قال وكانت لنا الدبرة عليهم ومررت بعجوز من بني تميم منقطع بها فسألتني أن أحملها إليك وها هي بالباب فأذن لها فدخلت فقلت يا رسول الله إن رأيت أن تجعل بيننا وبين بني تميم حاجزا فاجعل الدهناء فحميت العجوز واستوفزت قالت يا رسول الله فإلى أين تضطر مضرك قال قلت إنما مثلي ما قال الأول معزاء حملت حتفها حملت هذه ولا أشعر أنها كانت لي خصما أعوذ بالله ورسوله أن أكون كوافد عاد قال هيه وما وافد عاد وهو أعلم بالحديث منه ولكن يستطعمه قلت إن عادا قحطوا فبعثوا وافدا لهم يقال له قيل فمر بمعاوية بن بكر فأقام عنده شهرا يسقيه الخمر وتغنيه جاريتان يقال لهما الجرادتان فلما مضى الشهر خرج جبال تهامة فنادى اللهم إنك تعلم أني لم أجئ إلى مريض فأداويه ولا إلى أسير فأفاديه اللهم اسق عادا ما كنت تسقيه فمرت به سحابات سود فنودي منها اختر فأومأ إلى سحابة منها سوداء فنودي منها خذها رمادا رمددا لا تبق من عاد أحدا قال فما بلغني أنه بعث عليهم من الريح إلا قدر ما يجري في خاتمي هذا حتى هلكوا قال أبو وائل وصدق قال فكانت المرأة والرجل إذا بعثوا وافدا لهم قالوا لا تكن كوافد عاد
