I heard Hisham bin Hakeem bin Hizam reciting Surah al-Furqan, and he recited it in a way that contained letters which the Prophet of Allah ﷺ had not taught me. I was about to confront him while he was still praying, but I waited until he finished.Then I said, "Who taught you this recitation?"He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me."I said, "You are lying. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not teach you this way."So I took him by the hand and led him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, you taught me Surah al-Furqan, and I heard this man reciting it in a way that contains letters you did not teach me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Recite, Hisham."So he recited it as he had recited before.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It was revealed this way."Then he said, "Recite, Umar."So I recited, and he said, "It was revealed this way."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Quran was revealed in seven modes of recitation."
حدثنا عبد الأعلى بن عبد الأعلى عن معمر عن الزهري عن عروة بن الزبير عن المسور بن مخرمة أن
سمعت هشام بن حكيم بن حزام يقرأ سورة الفرقان فقرأ فيها حروفا لم يكن نبي الله ﷺ أقرأنيها قال فأردت أن أساوره وهو في الصلاة فلما فرغ قلت من أقرأك هذه القراءة قال رسول الله ﷺ قلت كذبت والله ما هكذا أقرأك رسول الله ﷺ فأخذت بيده أقوده فانطلقت به إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقلت يا رسول الله إنك أقرأتني سورة الفرقان وإني سمعت هذا يقرأ فيها حروفا لم تكن أقرأتنيها فقال رسول الله ﷺ اقرأ يا هشام فقرأ كما كان قرأ فقال رسول الله ﷺ هكذا أنزلت ثم قال اقرأ يا عمر فقرأت فقال هكذا أنزلت ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ إن القرآن نزل على سبعة أحرف
