The Prophet ﷺ was asked which deeds are best.He replied, "Faith without doubt, jihad without misappropriation of spoils, and an accepted pilgrimage."He was asked, "Which prayer is best?"He answered, "The one with the longest standing."He was asked, "Which charity is best?"He answered, "The effort of one who has little."He was asked, "Which migration is best?"He answered, "That a person abandons what Allah has forbidden him."He was asked, "Which jihad is best?"He answered, "That a person strives against the polytheists with his wealth and his life."He was asked, "Which death in battle is most honorable?"He answered, "That of the one whose blood is shed and whose horse is hamstrung."
حدثنا حجاج قال قال ابن جريج حدثني عثمان بن أبي سليمان عن علي الأزدي عن عبيد بن عمير
أن النبي ﷺ سئل أي الأعمال أفضل قال إيمان لا شك فيه وجهاد لا غلول فيه وحجة مبرورة قيل فأي الصلاة أفضل قال طول القنوت قيل فأي الصدقة أفضل قال جهد المقل قيل فأي الهجرة أفضل قال من هجر ما حرم الله عليه قيل فأي الجهاد أفضل قال من جاهد المشركين بماله ونفسه قيل فأي القتل أشرف قال من أهريق دمه وعقر جواده
Its isnad is sahih. Its narrators are eminent, Uthman bin Abu Sulayman Qurashi Nawfali, Ali bin Abdullah Azdi Bariqi, and Ubayd bin Umayr Laythi Abu Asim, the Makkan, all of them Makkans and trustworthy, and Ibn Jurayj is also a Makkan.The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 2/69, number 1449, in the book of Prayer, chapter on the merit of voluntary prayer, and by Nasai, 5/58, number 2526, in the book of zakat, chapter on the effort of one with little means, and by Darimi, 1/390, number 1424, in the book of Prayer, chapter on which prayer is most excellent, and by Bayhaqi, 6/81, 9/272, 10/273.The hadith was already mentioned in shortened form on the authority of Jabir at number 14167.
