I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage when I fell gravely ill, to the point that I was on the verge of death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me, and I said, "Messenger of Allah, I have considerable wealth, and no one will inherit from me except a single daughter. Shall I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth?"He said, "No."I said, "Then half of my wealth?"He said, "No."I said, "Then a third of my wealth?"He said, "A third, and even a third is a lot. Saad, it is better for you to leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them destitute, begging from people. Saad, you will never spend anything seeking the face of Allah Almighty without being rewarded for it, even the morsel of food you place in your wife's mouth."I said, "Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions?"He said, "You will not be left behind to perform any deed seeking the face of Allah without it raising you in rank and elevation. Perhaps you will be left behind so that Allah may benefit some peoples through you and harm others. O Allah, complete my companions' migration for them and do not turn them back on their heels. But the unfortunate one is Saad bin Khawla." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him, as he had died in Mecca.
