When we entered the valley of Hunayn, he said, we descended into a valley from the valleys of Tihama, deep and sloping downward, and we were going down into it steadily. In the dimness of dawn, the enemy had set ambushes for us in its ravines, along its sides, and in its narrow passes. They had united, prepared themselves, and made ready.By Allah, nothing startled us as we were descending except the squadrons charging upon us as a single man. The people fled in retreat, continuing on without anyone turning back for anyone else. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned aside to the right, then called out, "Come to me, people. Come to me. I am the Messenger of Allah. I am Muhammad bin Abdullah."But it was no use. The camels piled into one another, and the people fled. Yet there remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a small group of the Muhajirun, the Ansar, and members of his household, not many in number. Among those who held firm with him ﷺ were Abu Bakr and Umar, and from his household Ali bin Abu Talib, Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib and his son Fadl bin Abbas, Abu Sufyan bin Harith, Rabia bin Harith, Ayman bin Ubayd, who was the son of Umm Ayman, and Usama bin Zayd. There was a man from Hawazin on a red camel of his, holding a black banner mounted on the tip of a long spear, riding ahead of his people while Hawazin followed behind him. Whenever he overtook anyone, he would thrust at him with his spear, and whenever the people slipped beyond his reach, he would raise the banner for those behind him, and they would follow him.Ibn Ishaq said, Asim bin Umar bin Qatada narrated to me from Abdul-Rahman bin Jabir from his father Jabir bin Abdullah, who said, While that man from Hawazin, the bearer of the banner, was on his camel doing what he was doing, Ali bin Abu Talib and a man from the Ansar made for him, intending to bring him down. Ali came at him from behind and struck the camel's hocks, and it fell on its haunches. The Ansari leapt upon the man and struck him a blow that severed his foot at the middle of his shin, and he toppled from his saddle. The people clashed in combat. By Allah, the people who had fled in defeat did not return until they found the captives bound at the side of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
