Jabir reported, I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa, riding a weak camel of mine. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned back, the company began to move on while I kept falling behind, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with me and asked, "What is the matter with you, Jabir?"I replied, "Messenger of Allah, this camel of mine has slowed me down."He said, "Make it kneel."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also made his own camel kneel, then said, "Hand me that stick from your hand," or he said, "Cut me a stick from a tree."I did so. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and prodded the camel with it a few times, then said, "Mount."I mounted, and by the One who sent him with the truth, my camel set off keeping pace with his she-camel stride for stride.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke with me as we rode, and he asked, "Will you sell me this camel of yours, Jabir?"I replied, "Messenger of Allah, rather let me give it to you as a gift."He said, "No, sell it to me."I said, "Then name a price for it."He said, "I will take it for a dirham."I said, "No, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would be cheating me."He said, "Then for two dirhams."I said, "No."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept raising the price for me until it reached an ounce of silver.I said, "I am content with that."He asked, "Are you content?"I said, "Yes. It is yours."He said, "I have taken it."Then he said to me, "Jabir, have you married yet?"I replied, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He asked, "A previously married woman or a virgin?"I said, "A previously married woman."He asked, "Why not a young girl, that you might play with her and she with you?"I replied, "Messenger of Allah, my father was killed at the Battle of Uhud and left behind seven daughters. So I married a woman who could gather them together, comb their hair, and look after them."He said, "You have done well, Allah willing. When we reach Sirar, we will order a camel to be slaughtered, and we will stay there for the day. She will hear of our arrival and will shake out her cushions for us."I said, "By Allah, Messenger of Allah, we have no cushions."He said, "You will have them. So when you arrive, do something thoughtful."When we reached Sirar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered a camel to be slaughtered and we stayed there that day. When evening came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Madinah and we entered with him.I told my wife what had happened and what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said to me. She replied, "Then go ahead. To hear is to obey."In the morning, I took the camel by its head and brought it until I made it kneel at the door of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then I sat in the mosque close by.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out, saw the camel, and asked, "What is this?"They said, "Messenger of Allah, this is a camel that Jabir has brought."He asked, "Where is Jabir?"I was called for him. He said, "Come, nephew, take the head of your camel, for it is yours."He then called Bilal and said, "Take Jabir and give him an ounce of silver."I went with him, and he gave me an ounce of silver and added a little extra (Wazad).By Allah, it kept growing in our household and we used to see its place in our home, until it was lost yesterday along with what the people lost, meaning on the Day of al-Harrah.
حدثنا يعقوب حدثنا أبي عن محمد بن إسحاق حدثني وهب بن كيسان
خرجت مع رسول الله ﷺ في غزوة ذات الرقاع مرتحلا على جمل لي ضعيف فلما قفل رسول الله ﷺ جعلت الرفاق تمضي وجعلت أتخلف حتى أدركني رسول الله ﷺ فقال ما لك يا جابر قال قلت يا رسول الله أبطأ بي جملي هذا قال فأنخه وأناخ رسول الله ﷺ ثم قال أعطني هذه العصا من يدك أو قال اقطع لي عصا من شجرة قال ففعلت قال فأخذ رسول الله ﷺ فنخسه بها نخسات ثم قال اركب فركبت فخرج والذي بعثه بالحق يواهق ناقته مواهقة قال وتحدث معي رسول الله ﷺ فقال أتبيعني جملك هذا يا جابر قال قلت يا رسول الله بل أهبه لك قال لا ولكن بعنيه قال قلت فسمني به قال قد قلت أخذته بدرهم قال قلت لا إذا يغبنني رسول الله ﷺ قال فبدرهمين قال قلت لا قال فلم يزل يرفع لي رسول الله ﷺ حتى بلغ الأوقية قال قلت فقد رضيت قال قد رضيت قلت نعم قلت هو لك قال قد أخذته قال ثم قال لي يا جابر هل تزوجت بعد قال قلت نعم يا رسول الله قال أثيبا أم بكرا قال قلت بل ثيبا قال أفلا جارية تلاعبها وتلاعبك قال قلت يا رسول الله إن أبي أصيب يوم أحد وترك بنات له سبعا فنكحت امرأة جامعة تجمع رءوسهن وتقوم عليهن قال أصبت إن شاء الله قال أما إنا لو قد جئنا صرارا أمرنا بجزور فنحرت وأقمنا عليها يومنا ذلك وسمعت بنا فنفضت نمارقها قال قلت والله يا رسول الله ما لنا من نمارق قال إنها ستكون فإذا أنت قدمت فاعمل عملا كيسا قال فلما جئنا صرارا أمر رسول الله ﷺ بجزور فنحرت فأقمنا عليها ذلك اليوم فلما أمسى رسول الله ﷺ دخل ودخلنا قال فأخبرت المرأة الحديث وما قال لي رسول الله ﷺ قالت فدونك فسمعا وطاعة قال فلما أصبحت أخذت برأس الجمل فأقبلت به حتى أنخته على باب رسول الله ﷺ ثم جلست في المسجد قريبا منه قال وخرج رسول الله ﷺ فرأى الجمل فقال ما هذا قالوا يا رسول الله هذا جمل جاء به جابر قال فأين جابر فدعيت له قال تعال أي يا ابن أخي خذ برأس جملك فهو لك قال فدعا بلالا فقال اذهب بجابر فأعطه أوقية فذهبت معه فأعطاني أوقية وزادني شيئا يسيرا قال فوالله مازال ينمي عندنا ونرى مكانه من بيتنا حتى أصيب أمس فيما أصيب الناس يعني يوم الحرة
