Umar bin Khattab reported,

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The martyrs are four.The first is a believing man of solid faith who meets the enemy and is true to Allah until he is killed. He is the one whom people will look up to like this." Then he raised his head until the cap of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or the cap of Umar, fell off."The second is a believing man who meets the enemy, and it is as though his back is being struck with the thorns of acacia trees out of fear, then a stray arrow strikes him and kills him. He is at the second rank.The third is a believing man who mixed righteous deeds with other evil ones. He meets the enemy and is true to Allah until he is killed. He is at the third rank.The fourth is a believing man who was greatly excessive against himself. He meets the enemy and is true to Allah until he is killed. He is at the fourth rank."

حدثنا يحيى بن إسحاق أنبأنا ابن لهيعة عن عطاء بن دينار عن أبي يزيد الخولاني قال سمعت فضالة بن عبيد يقول سمعت

عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه يقول

سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول الشهداء أربعة رجل مؤمن جيد الإيمان لقي العدو فصدق الله فقتل فذلك الذي ينظر الناس إليه هكذا ورفع رأسه حتى سقطت قلنسوة رسول الله ﷺ أو قلنسوة عمر والثاني رجل مؤمن لقي العدو فكأنما يضرب ظهره بشوك الطلح جاءه سهم غرب فقتله فذاك في الدرجة الثانية والثالث رجل مؤمن خلط عملا صالحا وآخر سيئا لقي العدو فصدق الله عز وجل حتى قتل قال فذاك في الدرجة الثالثة والرابع رجل مؤمن أسرف على نفسه إسرافا كثيرا لقي العدو فصدق الله حتى قتل فذاك في الدرجة الرابعة
