Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

Hatib bin Abu Balta wrote to the people of Mecca informing them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to launch a campaign against them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was directed to the woman who was carrying the letter, so he sent for her and took the letter from her hair.He said, "Hatib, did you do this?"He replied, "Yes. But I did not do it out of disloyalty to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Yunus's version reads, "Not out of disloyalty, Messenger of Allah, nor hypocrisy. I knew that Allah would grant victory to His Messenger and bring His cause to completion. It is only that I was a stranger among them, and my mother was one of them, so I wanted to secure a favor with them by this."Umar said, "Shall I strike off this man's head?"He replied, "Would you kill a man who fought at Badr? What do you know, perhaps Allah عز وجل has looked upon the people of Badr and said, 'Do as you wish.'"
