Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us out and placed Abu Ubayda in command over us, to intercept a caravan belonging to Quraysh. He provided us with a sack of dates as our only provision, since he had nothing else to give us.Abu Ubayda would hand us out one date at a time.I asked, "What did you do with it?"He replied, "We would suck on it the way a child sucks, then drink some water afterward, and that would suffice us for the whole day until nightfall. We also used to beat down leaves from the trees with our staves, then moisten them with water and eat them."We traveled along the seashore, and there appeared before us on the shore what looked like a huge sand dune. When we came to it, we found it was a creature called the anbar.Abu Ubayda said, "It is dead carrion."Then Hasan bin Musa reported, he said, "No, rather we are envoys of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Hashim in his version said, "No, rather we are envoys of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we are in the path of Allah, and you have been driven to necessity, so eat."We stayed there a whole month, three hundred men in number, until we grew fat. I remember us scooping oil out of the sockets of its eyes with large jars and cutting off chunks of it the size of a bull, or the size of a bull's portion.Abu Ubayda took thirteen men from among us and seated them inside the socket of one of its eyes. He took one of its ribs and set it upright, then loaded the largest camel we had. Hasan said, "Then he loaded the largest camel that was with us," and the camel passed beneath the rib.We took strips of its meat as provisions for the journey. When we arrived back in Madinah, we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned this to him. He said, "It is sustenance that Allah brought forth for you. Do you have any of its meat with you that you could feed us?"So we sent some of it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he ate it.

عن جابر قال

بعثنا رسول الله ﷺ وأمر علينا أبا عبيدة نتلقى عيرا لقريش وزودنا جرابا من تمر لم يجد لنا غيره قال فكان أبو عبيدة يعطينا تمرة تمرة قال قلت كيف كنتم تصنعون بها قال نمصها كما يمص الصبي ثم نشرب عليها من الماء فيكفينا يومنا إلى الليل قال وكنا نضرب بعصينا الخبط ثم نبله بالماء فنأكله قال وانطلقنا على ساحل البحر فرفع لنا على ساحل البحر كهيئة الكثيب الضخم فأتيناه فإذا هو دابة يدعى العنبر قال أبو عبيدة ميتة قال حسن بن موسى ثم قال لا بل نحن رسل رسول الله ﷺ وقال هاشم في حديثه قال لا بل نحن رسل رسول الله ﷺ وفي سبيل الله وقد اضطررتم فكلوا وأقمنا عليه شهرا ونحن ثلاث مائة حتى سمنا ولقد رأيتنا نغترف من وقب عينيه بالقلال الدهن ونقتطع منه الفدر كالثور أو كقدر الثور قال ولقد أخذ منا أبو عبيدة ثلاثة عشر رجلا فأقعدهم في وقب عينه وأخذ ضلعا من أضلاعه فأقامها ثم رحل أعظم بعير معنا قال حسن ثم رحل أعظم بعير كان معنا فمر من تحتها وتزودنا من لحمه وشائق فلما قدمنا المدينة أتينا رسول الله ﷺ فذكرنا ذلك له فقال هو رزق أخرجه الله عز وجل لكم فهل معكم من لحمه شيء فتطعمونا قال فأرسلنا إلى رسول الله ﷺ منه فأكله
