The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called upon the people on the Day of the Trench, and Zubayr volunteered. Then he called upon them again, and Zubayr volunteered. Then he called upon them a third time, and Zubayr volunteered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Every prophet has a disciple, and my disciple is Zubayr."Sufyan said, "I heard Ibn Munkadir narrate this in this mosque."
حدثنا سفيان عن ابن المنكدر سمع
ندب رسول الله ﷺ الناس يوم الخندق فانتدب الزبير ثم ندب الناس فانتدب الزبير ثم ندب الناس فانتدب الزبير فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن لكل نبي حواريا وحواري الزبير قال سفيان سمعت ابن المنكدر في هذا المسجد
Its isnad is sahih. The hadith was narrated by the leading scholars with this wording and chain, through Sufyan from him. See Bukhari 13/239, no. 7261, in Fath al-Bari, in the chapter on reports transmitted by a single narrator, "The Prophet ﷺ sent Zubayr alone as a scout," and Muslim 4/1879, no. 2415, in the virtues of the companions, on the virtues of Talha and Zubayr, and Ibn Majah with the same wording, 1/45, no. 122, in the introduction, on the virtue of Zubayr, and Abu Hanifa through another route, 2/285, and Tabarani in al-Kabir, 1/83, and in al-Saghir, 2/12, and Ibn Abu Asim in al-Sunnah, 2/610.
