We arrived with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when four days of Dhu al-Hijjah had passed, and we were in a state of ihram for Hajj. He commanded us to convert it into Umra. This troubled us greatly and weighed heavily upon us. When word of this reached him, he said, "People, exit your state of ihram. Were it not for the sacrificial animal I have with me, I would have done what you are doing." So we did so, to the point that we approached our wives and did everything a person not in ihram does. Then, when it was the eve of the Day of Tarwiya, or the Day of Tarwiya itself, we left Mecca behind us and entered ihram for Hajj.
حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن عبد الملك عن عطاء
قدمنا مع رسول الله ﷺ لأربع مضين من ذي الحجة ونحن محرمون بالحج فأمرنا أن نجعلها عمرة فضاقت بذلك صدورنا وكبر علينا فبلغه ذلك فقال يا أيها الناس أحلوا فلولا الهدي الذي معي لفعلت مثل ما تفعلون ففعلنا حتى وطئنا النساء ما يفعل الحلال حتى إذا كان عشية التروية أو يوم التروية جعلنا مكة بظهر ولبينا بالحج
