On the day of Hunayn, Hawazin and Ghatafan gathered a great host against the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ that day had ten thousand men, or more than ten thousand, and with him were the Tulaqa, those freed at the conquest of Mecca. The enemy brought along their livestock and their women and children, placing them behind their backs. When the two sides met, the people fled. The Prophet ﷺ that day was on a white mule. He dismounted and said, "I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger."He called out twice that day, with no other speech mixed between the two calls. He turned to his right and said, "Company of the Ansar!"They answered, "At your service, Messenger of Allah. Rejoice, we are with you."Then he turned to his left and said, "Company of the Ansar!"They answered, "At your service, Messenger of Allah. We are with you."Then he dismounted onto the ground, and the two sides clashed. The enemy was routed, and spoils were taken. The Prophet ﷺ gave to the Tulaqa and distributed shares among them. The Ansar said, "We are summoned at the time of battle, but the spoils are given to others."Word of this reached the Prophet ﷺ, so he gathered them and sat in a tent and said, "Company of the Ansar, what is this report that has reached me about you?"They were silent. Then he said, "Company of the Ansar, if the people were to travel through one valley and the Ansar through another mountain pass, I would take the pass of the Ansar."Then he said, "Are you not pleased that the people should depart with worldly goods while you depart with the Messenger of Allah, taking him with you to your homes?"They said, "We are pleased, Messenger of Allah. We are pleased."Ibn Awn said that Hisham bin Zayd reported, I said to Anas, "Were you a witness to that?"He replied, "How could I be absent from that?"
