Umar and I left after the noon prayer, which Hisham bin Ismail had led for the people while he was governor of Medina, and we went to Amr bin Abdullah bin Abu Talha to visit him during an illness. We had barely sat down before we asked about him, only standing. Then we left and went in to see Anas bin Malik at his house, which was next to the house of Abu Talha.When we sat down, the servant girl came to him and said, "It is time for prayer, Abu Hamza."We asked, "Which prayer, may Allah have mercy on you?"He replied, "The afternoon prayer."We said, "We have only just prayed the noon prayer."He said, "You have neglected the prayer until you have forgotten it," or he said, "You have forgotten it until you have neglected it. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'I and the Hour have been sent like these two,'" and he extended his two fingers, the index and the middle.
حدثنا يعقوب أخبرنا أبي عن ابن إسحاق
انصرفت من الظهر أنا وعمر حين صلاها هشام بن إسماعيل بالناس إذ كان على المدينة إلى عمرو بن عبد الله بن أبي طلحة نعوده في شكوى له فما قعدنا ما سألنا عنه إلا قياما قال ثم انصرفنا فدخلنا على أنس بن مالك في داره وهي إلى جنب دار أبي طلحة قال فلما قعدنا أتته الجارية فقالت الصلاة يا أبا حمزة قال قلنا أي الصلاة رحمك الله قال العصر قال فقلنا إنما صلينا الظهر الآن قال فقال إنكم تركتم الصلاة حتى نسيتموها أو قال نسيتموها حتى تركتموها إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول بعثت أنا والساعة كهاتين ومد أصبعيه السبابة والوسطى
