A Jewish man passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "As-samu alayka," meaning "Death be upon you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "And upon you."Then he asked, "Do you know what he said? He said, 'Death be upon you.'"They said, "Should we not kill him?"He answered, "No, but when the People of the Book greet you, say, 'And upon you.'"
حدثنا روح قال حدثنا شعبة قال حدثنا هشام بن زيد بن أنس بن مالك قال سمعت
أن يهوديا مر على رسول الله ﷺ فقال السام عليك فقال رسول الله ﷺ وعليك أتدرون ما قال قال السام عليكم فقالوا ألا نقتله فقال لا ولكن إذا سلم عليكم أهل الكتاب فقولوا وعليكم
