I said to Ali, "Tell me about this expedition of yours. Was it something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted to you, or simply your own judgment?"He replied, "Why do you ask about this?"I said, "It concerns our religion, our religion."He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted nothing to me about it. It was my own judgment."
Its isnad is sahih. Ismail Abu Muamar is Ismail bin Ibrahim bin Muamar Hudhali, discussed previously at 426. Ibn Ulaya is Ismail bin Ibrahim bin Miqsam Asadi, and he is trustworthy, described by Shuba as the fragrance of the jurists and as the master of the hadith scholars. Hadiths 1264-1270 are among the additions of Abdullah bin Ahmad. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 4/300, from Ismail bin Ibrahim Hudhali, from Ibn Ulaya.
