Anas bin Malik reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon Hamza and stood over him. He saw that he had been mutilated and said, "Were it not that Safiyya would feel grieved, I would have left him so that the wild beasts might consume him." Zayd bin Hubab said, "So that the scavengers might consume him until he is gathered from their bellies."Then he called for a striped cloak and shrouded him in it. When it was pulled over his head, his feet were exposed, and when it was pulled over his feet, his head was exposed. The slain were many and the cloths were few. So one cloth was used to shroud one man, or two men, or three (Safwan was uncertain) in a single garment. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would ask which of them had memorized the most of the Quran, and he would place that one closest to the qiblah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then buried them and did not perform the funeral prayer over them.Zayd bin Hubab said, "So one man, or two, or three would be shrouded in a single garment."
