The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in spiritual retreat in the mosque when he heard the people reciting aloud. He was inside a small tent, so he drew back the curtains and said, "Each of you is in private conversation with his Lord, so let none of you disturb another, and let none of you raise his voice over another in recitation," or he said, "in prayer."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق حدثنا معمر عن إسماعيل بن أمية عن أبي سلمة بن عبد الرحمن
اعتكف رسول الله ﷺ في المسجد فسمعهم يجهروا بالقراءة وهو في قبة له فكشف الستور وكشف وقال ألا كلكم مناج ربه فلا يؤذين بعضكم بعضا ولا يرفعن بعضكم على بعض في القراءة أو قال في الصلاة
Its isnad is sahih. Ismail bin Umaya is al-Umawi. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 2/38, no. 1331, in the Book of Prayer, chapter on raising the voice while reciting. Hakim graded it sahih, 1/311, and Dhahabi agreed with him, as did Bayhaqi, 3/11.
