The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared the area between the two lava plains of Madinah a sanctuary, forbidding that its trees be cut down or their leaves beaten off.
حدثنا يحيى عن سعد بن إسحاق قال حدثتني زينب
حرم رسول الله ﷺ ما بين لابتي المدينة أن يعضد شجرها أو يخبط
Its chain of transmission is sahih, like the one before it. The two lava fields of Madinah are the two harrahs, the eastern and the western. A harrah is a region where an ancient volcano erupted, so its stones are black and its sand is black, which absorbs the heat of the sun, increasing the heat of the area. His saying "its trees are cut" means chopped down, and his saying "beaten down" means the leaves are struck so they fall and camels or livestock can eat them. The hadith is found in Muslim 2/1001, number 1374, and Abu Dawud 2/217, number 2036.
