A man came from Najran to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing a gold ring. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and did not ask him about anything. The man returned to his wife and told her what had happened.She said, "There must be some reason for this. Go back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."So he returned to him, after first removing his ring and a robe he had been wearing. When he asked permission to enter, it was granted, and he greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who returned the greeting.The man said, "Messenger of Allah, you turned away from me when I came to you earlier."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You came to me with a coal of fire in your hand."The man replied, "Messenger of Allah, then I have come with many coals indeed," for he had brought jewelry from Bahrain.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What you have brought is of no benefit to us, no more than the stones of the Harrah, but it is merely the enjoyment of worldly life."The man said, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, clear my name before your companions, lest they think you were displeased with me for some fault.'"So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and cleared his name, explaining that what had happened was only because of his gold ring.
حدثنا هارون بن معروف حدثنا ابن وهب حدثني عمرو بن الحارث عن بكر بن سوادة أن أبا النجيب مولى عبد الله بن سعد حدثه أن
أن رجلا قدم من نجران إلى رسول الله ﷺ وعليه خاتم ذهب فأعرض عنه رسول الله ﷺ ولم يسأله عن شيء فرجع الرجل إلى امرأته فحدثها فقالت إن لك لشأنا فارجع إلى رسول الله ﷺ فرجع إليه فألقى خاتمه وجبة كانت عليه فلما استأذن أذن له وسلم على رسول الله ﷺ فرد عليه السلام فقال يا رسول الله أعرضت عني قبل حين جئتك فقال رسول الله ﷺ إنك جئتني وفي يدك جمرة من نار فقال يا رسول الله لقد جئت إذا بجمر كثير وكان قد قدم بحلي من البحرين فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن ما جئت به غير مغن عنا شيئا إلا ما أغنت حجارة الحرة ولكنه متاع الحياة الدنيا فقال الرجل فقلت يا رسول الله اعذرني في أصحابك لا يظنون أنك سخطت علي بشيء فقام رسول الله ﷺ فعذره وأخبر أن الذي كان منه إنما كان لخاتمه الذهب
