I heard a man asking forgiveness for his parents while they were polytheists, so I said, "Are you asking forgiveness for your parents while they are polytheists?"He replied, "Did Ibrahim not ask forgiveness for his father while he was a polytheist?"I mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ, and then the verse was revealed, "It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists" [Tawbah 9:113], to the end of the two verses.Abdul-Rahman said, then Allah revealed, "And the request of forgiveness of Ibrahim for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him" [Tawbah 9:114].
حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان ح وحدثنا عبد الرحمن قال حدثنا سفيان عن أبي إسحاق عن أبي الخليل
سمعت رجلا يستغفر لأبويه وهما مشركان فقلت تستغفر لأبويك وهما مشركان فقال أليس قد استغفر إبراهيم لأبيه وهو مشرك قال فذكرت ذلك للنبي ﷺ فنزلت {ما كان للنبي والذين آمنوا أن يستغفروا للمشركين} إلى آخر الآيتين قال عبد الرحمن فأنزل الله {وما كان استغفار إبراهيم لأبيه إلا عن موعدة وعدها إياه}
