A man entered the masjid.Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the masjid, and a man came in and prayed. Then he came and greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and said, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed."So the man went back and prayed just as he had prayed before, then came to the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "And peace be upon you." Then he said, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed."This happened three times, until the man said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I cannot do it any better than this, so teach me."The Prophet said, "When you stand for prayer, say the takbir, then recite whatever you can of the Quran, then bow until you are settled in your bowing, then rise until you are standing straight, then prostrate until you are settled in your prostration, then sit until you are settled in your sitting. Then do that throughout the whole of your prayer."Qanabi narrated it from Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, and he said at the end of it, "If you do this, your prayer is complete, and whatever of this you leave out, you have taken away that much from your prayer." He also included in it, "When you stand for prayer, perform the wudu thoroughly."In his version the Prophet ﷺ said, "No person's prayer is complete until he performs wudu, applying the water to its proper places, then says the takbir, praises Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, extols Him, and recites whatever he can of the Quran. Then he says, 'Allah is the greatest,' then bows until his joints are settled, then says, 'Allah hears the one who praises Him,' until he is standing upright. Then he says, 'Allah is the greatest,' then prostrates until his joints are settled. Then he says, 'Allah is the greatest,' and raises his head until he is sitting upright. Then he says, 'Allah is the greatest,' then prostrates until his joints are settled. Then he raises his head and says the takbir. When he has done this, his prayer is complete."
