Nafi reported that Ubada bin Samit was late for the dawn prayer, so Abu Naeem the muadhin called the iqamah and led the people in prayer. Ubada arrived, and I was with him, and we lined up in a row behind Abu Naeem, who was reciting aloud. Ubada began reciting the Mother of the Quran. When the prayer ended, I said to Ubada, "I heard you reciting the Mother of the Quran while Abu Naeem was reciting aloud."He replied, "Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once led us in one of the prayers in which the recitation is aloud, and his recitation became confused. When he finished, he turned to us and asked, 'Do you recite when I am reciting aloud?'Some of us said, 'Yes, we do that.'He said, 'Do not. I was wondering why the Quran was being contested with me. So do not recite anything from the Quran when I recite aloud, except the Mother of the Quran.'"
[Its chain is sahih] Nasai narrated it in "Iftitah", chapter "On Reciting Umm Quran Behind the Imam in What He Recites Aloud", hadith 921, from the hadith of Zayd bin Waqid, with the same wording. Daraqutni graded it hasan (1/320), and Bayhaqi graded it sahih in his book Qiraah Khalf Imam, pages 50, 51. Diya Maqdisi mentioned it in Mukhtarah (8/346, hadith 421).Nafi bin Mahmud is trustworthy. Daraqutni, Hakim, Ibn Hazm in Muhalla (3/241, 242), Ibn Hibban, Bayhaqi, and Dhahabi in Kashif all deemed him trustworthy, and there is no weight to be given to anyone who called him "unknown" or "obscure" after this confirmation of his reliability. The hadith has corroborating narrations.
