We were behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the Fajr prayer, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, but the recitation became difficult for him. When he finished, he asked, "Do you perhaps recite behind your imam?"We replied, "Yes, we do, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Do not do so, except for the Opening of the Book, for there is no prayer for the one who does not recite it."

كنا خلف رسول الله ﷺ في صلاة الفجر فقرأ رسول الله ﷺ فثقلت عليه القراءة فلما فرغ قال لعلكم تقرءون خلف إمامكم قلنا نعم هذا يا رسول الله قال لا تفعلوا إلا بفاتحة الكتاب فإنه لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بها
[Sahih] Reported by Tirmidhi, Prayer, chapter on what has been said about reciting behind the imam, no. 311, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq, and he explicitly stated hearing it directly, as found in Ahmad, 5/322, and others. Tirmidhi said, hasan, and Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 1581, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 460. Makhul narrated it using an "an" formula without specifying direct hearing, but his hadith has supporting narrations, including the one that follows.
